N.Y.C. FEMALE DJ CONTEST FEB 1ST |
Los Angeles event production company, Soul Spinners Society, is launching Madam of the Mix Open Turntables in New York City. Lady DJs of all levels are invited to sign up and showcase their skills. The event is first-come first-served and DJs should be prepared to rock a 30-minute set. The first event will take place Feb. 1st. GRAMMY CAMP DOC SCREENING AT GRAMMY MUSEUM |
On Feb. 5 during Grammy week, the Grammy Museum will host the premiere of a documentary titled “Happy On The Ground: 8 Days At Grammy Camp.” It chronicles 83 hand-picked high school musicians from around the US who were brought together by Grammy Camp to write original material alone and together, and produce a showcase concert in only eight days. In the documentary, the group is mentored by Gavin Rossdale, Barry Manilow, Boyz II Men, Dave Koz and Dave Krusen of Pearl Jam. The film was created as a tool to encourage funding in public schools for music education, and showcases the raw talent that is waiting to be discovered. Gloria Bennett, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, January 25th, in San Diego, CA. Gloria was a noted voice teacher and author in Hollywood for over forty years. She was a regular advertiser in the pages of Music Connection magazine. Her students included Exene Cervenka, Susan Rhee, Keb’ Mo’, Dexter Holland from the Offspring, Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Axl Rose from Guns N’ Roses, Vince Neil from Motley Crue and many, many others. She came from a musical family. Her mother was a piano teacher and her father sang in the chorus for The Metropolitan Opera Company. Formal training for Gloria as an opera singer began at the age of thirteen in New York. Some of Gloria’s highlights included performing with the Amato Opera Company, hosting her own radio program devoted to classical music, and helping form the Sacramento Opera Company. A coloratura soprano, Ms. Bennett studied with such greats as Queena Mario, Galena Prengel, Gunda Morden, Rosalie Miller, Felix Popper and Maestro Nicolai Palumbo. She is survived by her children Margo Essman (Gene) from San Diego and Martin Bennett (Linda) from Las Vegas. |
