There is such a thing as Hip Hop Tourism. And that’s the practical business approach to looking at the recent trip by Switzerland born and raised Hiphoppas from Winterthur. On the other hand this was more like a Hip Hop pilgrimage to the birthplace of Hip Hop, NYC, New York City. This is where the culture they live everyday began and they fulfilled a life-long dream of making the Haj to Mecca, as it were.
My brothers from Switzerland Igi Be and Be Low came to America for 3 weeks to experience the culture. They went to many of the historical spots in Hip Hop History guided by the legendary Grandmaster Caz on the Crush Tour Bus. As True School Hiphoppas and members of the Zulu Nation, they met with Afrika Bambaataa at their open meeting in Harlem.
They attended the Wild Style reunion with director Charles Ahearn. They were present at some dope park jams and I took them to the premiere spot for underground Hip Hop emceein, EODUB aka End of the Weak’s 13th anniversary at the Pyramid Nightclub on the Lower East Side (LES).
We also drove around NY and NJ to see some random sites in Newark NJ and Brooklyn like Juniors Cheesecake. These are the kind of Hiphoppas that will support the future of real Hip Hop. They respect the legends and the true culture and are not just fans of the hyped up current b.s. This is how we preserve our culture by passing it on to those who respect it and have love for it.
Remember some of the biggest supporters of Real Hip Hop may not even speak English as their first language. People like Igi and Be Low are the future of Real Hip Hop! Don’t get it twisted!
