Usually meteorites don’t enter the lower atmosphere near populated areas of any significant size. However, on February 15th 2013 a meteor entered the lower atmosphere, about 18 miles above the Earth, where it exploded and caused a sonic concussion that blew out windows and set off car alarms for miles around Chelyabinsk Russia. Up to 1,000 people have been reported to be injured by glass and debris and at least 43 were hospitalized.

Such a phenomenon is a rare occurrence, yet with the prevalence of video phone technology, there are multiple shots of the incident, which have been recorded. Check out the video below.

The Russian Academy of Sciences said the meteor – estimated to be about 10 tons – entered the Earth’s atmosphere going at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph). It shattered about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above the ground, releasing several kilotons of energy above the Ural Mountains.
